Saint Joseph Vaz, the Missionary of India

St. Joseph Vaz (1651–1711) was a Catholic missionary priest from India, known as the Apostle of Sri Lanka. During a time of religious persecution, he played a vital role in spreading Christianity throughout the island. Pope Saint John Paul II beatified him in 1995, and Pope Francis canonized him in 2015. Origins and Formation

Birth and Family:
Saint Joseph Vaz was born on April 21, 1651, in Goa, India (then a Portuguese colony). Raised in a devout Catholic family, he demonstrated strong religious devotion from a young age.

Education and Priesthood:
He studied humanities and theology at the College of Saint Paul in Goa. Afterward, he was ordained a priest in 1676, becoming known for his prayerful life and pastoral dedication.

Missionary Work in India

Saint Joseph Vaz began his ministry in India, especially in Goa and Karnataka, where he revitalized the Christian faith. Moreover, he founded the Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Goa to train missionaries and strengthen the Church’s presence.

Mission in Sri Lanka: A Journey of Sacrifice

Facing Challenges Under Dutch Rule:
When Saint Joseph Vaz arrived in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), Dutch Protestant authorities had outlawed Catholicism. Determined to continue his mission, he disguised himself as a beggar in 1687 and traveled clandestinely to avoid arrest.

Underground Ministry and Miracles:
Despite persecution, he crossed the country under harsh conditions, secretly administering sacraments and forming Christian communities. Notably, after the king of Kandy arrested him, Joseph prayed for rain during a severe drought. When the rains came, the king released him and granted him protection, which allowed Joseph to continue his mission more openly.

Building a Lasting Presence:
Joseph Vaz not only preached but also translated religious texts into the local language. Additionally, he trained local catechists, which significantly strengthened the Christian community on the island.

Legacy and Canonization

Saint Joseph Vaz passed away on January 16, 1711, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, after solidifying the Christian presence there. His legacy ensured the survival of Christianity in Sri Lanka long after his death. In 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified him, and in 2015, Pope Francis canonized him during a visit to Sri Lanka. Thus, Joseph Vaz became one of the greatest missionaries in Church history.
